The Lenormand Oracle: The Little Gem In Cartomancy!

Powerful decks can come in small packages as the Lenormand oracle does with its charming little cards. Browse the internet and you will find different artwork variations of this French deck to please any taste. The pocket size cards showcase 36 symbols meant to trigger messages and psychic insights, their plain representation often mistakenly overlooked as an antique deck with unknown capability, linked by its name to the destiny of one of the most celebrated psychics in history: Mademoiselle Lenormand.

As Miss Lenormand came about in the wake of the French Revolution in the late 18th century, she made her fame by reading for notable personalities such as Josephine and her husband Napoleon Bonaparte in her little salon in Paris where royalty, aristocrats and revolutionaries came to inquire about their fate. She left a lasting legacy in the esoteric world with her prophecies and life story. As a token to her celebrity status, a small deck of cards was published around 1840 to the delight of her followers; the oracle, nicknamed ‘le petit jeu’ -in English, the small game as a deck of cards was meant to be a game- quickly became a must-have by collectors and a classic in cartomancy.

The small Lenormand mystic quality soared thereafter due to its startling way of unveiling hidden facts while providing eerie specifics regarding the future. But because few knew how to use it effectively, the oracle never made it beyond its native Europe, keeping it practically unknown in countries like United States or Australia by the middle of the 20th century. Sparse literature, sketchy methodology and lack of translation contributed to its elitist status, keeping this little gem hidden from the general population.

However for the professionals who learned the ways of the oracle, the future was no longer an impenetrable algorithm to decipher. Suddenly, the Lenormand was revealing the when, how and who so effectively it took seasoned readers by surprise and sparked a new interest into its functioning; the oracle was no longer perceived as an outdated set of simplistic symbols but a serious instrument for finding out answers to mundane questions and important issues. The Lenormand cards could bring forth what other more spiritual oracles could not, practical predictions!

As the Tarot became in the past two centuries the king of oracles, the challenges to foresee how certain situations were to come to pass or the difficulties to add nuances onto the Tarot forecasting options topped the complaint list of many psychics and tarot readers. As much as the Tarot offered complex spiritual and psychological analysis, it often failed to provide those day -to-day life details that are so craved by clients and readers alike. Fortunately, the Lenormand oracle proved itself to be effective in answering inquiries of that sort, rekindling passionate interests around its uses on many internet forums…

Within the past 5 years, new literatures about the small Lenormand have been published in Europe and in the States, making the process of understanding the oracle’s features easier and more accessible. A new generation of Lenormand practitioners is emerging worldwide and more people can now experience the predictive power of the small Lenormand cards either by learning how to use them or by seeking guidance from a Lenormand expert. It is for certain that this oracle will become more popular in the next decade as its renaissance has just begun in the international community as Japan, Malaysia and the Middle East are catching the Lenormand bug.

hi Sylvie, this is a lovely post. I do wish you would create a deck yourself to rival the mystical Lenormand.I have to say, that I only open the deck when I have pressing issues to address. I remember a time when any question would do. Somehow this seems so immature, naive and silly now. I hope 2012 will bring a new wave in the awakening of the Lenormand. how cool is it that there is a new wave occurring further east especially in South East Asia. I am from Malaysia myself, may be I may be able to rustle up fellow enthusiasts on my next trip home. I hope you may be persuaded in making a long trip to my neck of the world one-day.
    yours truly,
